WASHINGTON — Pfizer Inc. and Schering-Plough Corp. will soon launch a new product in the U. S. market that could be as effective as Viagra.
The drugs, made by Pfizer Inc., were approved by the Food and Drug Administration in the United States on Nov. 1 and had been available for more than a year. But they were only approved in Europe. The first major European drug was approved in the U. on Aug. 1 and the first product was expected in the U. on Oct. 30.
The companies will begin marketing their products by the end of the year, but they will need to demonstrate they have the same efficacy as the Viagra-maker.
Viagra and the two other drugs approved by the FDA in the U. are known as P-Force, a product for female patients who struggle with erectile dysfunction.
They work by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis, which helps a man achieve and maintain an erection when he is sexually stimulated.
The new products, which will contain the same active ingredients as the older products, will also work in a lower-dose setting. The drug companies hope to launch the new products in the U. in a few weeks.
"In the next couple of weeks, we will have more information and to determine whether they will be as effective as Viagra," said Dr. Steven Nissen, an urologist at New York University School of Medicine in New York.
Pfizer Inc. and Schering-Plough will launch the new products in the U. Nov. 1, when they are expected to launch the generic versions of their drugs at about the same time.
The drugs will be used for male impotence and have been available in Europe for years.
Pfizer will introduce the new products to the U. market, although they will be sold in other markets as well.
Nissen said he has not received any marketing authorization for the new drugs. "We don't know what we are going to do," he said. "We are going to go through the same thing every day."
Schering-Plough's new product, a product called Cialis, has already received approval from the FDA in the U. for use in men with ED.
The companies will be working closely with Pfizer to ensure that the products they produce will not become widely available outside of the U.
Dr. Paul D. Lechleiter, chairman of Urology, rology and Sexual Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine, said Pfizer's announcement would not affect the drug's marketing efforts. "We are very excited about the launch of Cialis, which is a new product," Dr. Lechleiter said.
The U. market for Cialis, which was first approved in 2003, includes the treatment of erectile dysfunction. The drug works by relaxing blood vessels and increasing blood flow to the penis, which is needed when a man is sexually stimulated.
Pfizer has also launched a generic version of Cialis in Europe and a version in the U. on Nov.
The two companies will be working closely to ensure Cialis remains as the most effective product available in the U. market.
Pfizer is conducting clinical tests and research on the products in order to determine which product may be most effective for men with ED.
In addition to Cialis, the companies are working with a variety of other drugs and health care providers to test their safety and effectiveness.
The products will be tested in the U. market in a number of ways, including through the company's Web site at www. Pfizer.com and the company's website, www.samshealth.com. "We are testing them in other countries where there is a higher risk of serious side effects," Dr.
The drug companies have also launched several other products to test for the safety and effectiveness of their products.
New product launches in the U. are likely to be made possible through a series of FDA-approved new marketing programs.
The drug companies hope to launch products in the U. 1, when the FDA approves marketing of their drugs.
New products are also being developed by researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the Baylor College of Medicine, which have been studying the safety of P-Force drugs for more than a decade.
